Composite Fillings: A More Beautiful Alternative

Standard metal fillings are effective in treating cavities, but are visible when smiling, talking, or laughing. Composite fillings are made of materials that match thecolor of your teeth, and look completely natural. Many people choose to have metal fillings removed and then replaced with composite fillings. Parents often choose this type of filling for their children.

Advancements in Dental Treatment

Over the years, how cavities are treated has radically changed. Silver fillings were once the standard. These fillings are made up of mercury, copper, and silver, and tin. These fillings are called silver, but actually the largest component is mercury, at 43 to 50%. These fillings resolved tooth decay problems, but left the patient with visible, unsightly grey areas in their teeth.

Leading dentists, including Dr. Barkhordar, use composite fillings rather than metal. These fillings are completely unnoticeable, blending in perfectly with the natural tooth color. The makeup of the composite is acrylic plastic, quartz fillers, and coloring agents that are manufactured to bond with the teeth. The advantages include avoiding any concerns about the leaching of metal components, and providing a more aesthetic appearance.

Benefits of Composite Fillings

There are several important benefits to filling cavities with composite filling material, including:

Improved Appearance

As the fillings are color-matched to your natural teeth, they make your smile brighter, and the fillings cannot be noticed by others when you laugh or smile.

Support

The materials that make up composite fillings are extremely effective in bonding to your natural teeth, and provide the optimum support.

Versatile Uses

Not only can cavities be filled with composite material, composite can also be used to restore chipped, broken or worn teeth, with a perfect color match.

More Natural Tooth Structure Remains in Place

In most cases, less of your natural tooth will need to be removed, preserving the strength of your tooth.

What to Expect When You Get Composite Fillings

At our office, we focus on patient comfort, from start to finish. Your composite fillings can be placed quickly, and we ensure you are completely comfortable throughout the entire process. The procedure involved in filling a cavity with a composite filling will include:

  1. Numbing the tooth and gum in the treatment area.
  2. Removal of the decay with a laser or traditional dental tool.
  3. Cleaning of the treated area to eliminate debris and any bacteria.
  4. A dental adhesive and the composite material placed in the prepared tooth.
  5. Bonding light applied to harden material.
  6. Your filling is complete.
  7. Initially you may feel some sensitivity to hot or cold, which should resolve over a short period of time.

Dr. Barkhordar cares about his patients, and always takes the time to talk with them and advise them of what to do to avoid further dental problems. Generally, maintaining dental health involves brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, and daily flossing. Ensuring you get a six-month checkup and cleaning is extremely important in maintaining good oral health.

Some people are much more at risk of cavities. For these patients, Dr. Barkhordar may decide to apply a dental sealant over the teeth to avoid the accumulation of food and bacteria that can lead to further decay and more dental treatments. He prefers his patients to understand how to avoid developing cavities or other dental problems, and if you follow his advice carefully, you will probably have a lifetime of good oral and dental health, with few, if any, cavities in the future.
