Dental bridges serve to completely solve the problem of a missing tooth or teeth. The process involves creating matching teeth that are anchored to crowns placed over your natural teeth on either side of the gap. This prosthetic device is extremely stable, secure, and virtually unnoticeable, and will restore the beauty of your natural smile.
The Benefits of a Bridge
When a person has lost a visible tooth, a dental bridge can be the perfect solution. The process has several benefits beyond restoring an attractive smile, including:
- Enhances the look of your face
- Corrects bite problems
- Prevents damage that can result from an improper bite
- Leaves you with strong, long-lasting and durable new teeth
Types of Bridges
There are three separate types of dental bridges available at Dr. Barkhordar’s office in Gardena. Each type of bridge is slightly different. You will be fully informed of the pros and cons so you understand why a certain type is right for you. Every mouth problem must be treated correctly, and you can count on Dr. Barkhordar to help you make the decision that is in your best interest and will most effectively resolve your problem.
With a traditional bridge, the prosthetic teeth are anchored to your natural teeth on either side, after they have been treated with special crowns for this purpose. These crowns (or “caps”) can also be anchored to an implant when necessary.
Maryland Bonded Bridge
Another option is called a Maryland bonded bridge. Rather than a new tooth (or teeth) being anchored with crowns, metal or porcelain wings are bonded with a special resin to the natural teeth on either side. As there is less natural tooth loss to complete this procedure, it may be advised for certain situations.
In some cases, only one natural anchor tooth is available. A cantilever bridge can be placed, anchored to just that tooth. These bridges have less support and can only be used successfully on certain teeth. All of the options for a bridge that suit your condition will be discussed with you so you understand why a cantilever bridge may be the right choice to correct your specific issue.
How the Dental Bridge Process Works
Installing a bridge will require several appointments to complete, over a few months. There are a number of steps involved. The first appointment will involve preparing your teeth for the installation of the bridge. Initially, Dr. Barkhordar prepares the teeth on either side for the application of crowns by reshaping each one. Impressions of your mouth will then be taken so that a perfect bridge is created to fit your mouth seamlessly and naturally. You will leave our office with a temporary prosthetic bridge to protect your mouth from damage and give you a better appearance while you are awaiting permanent restoration.
The next step involves placing dental implants. This is an important procedure, and involves determining whether there is sufficient bone in which to anchor an implant. To discover this, X-rays, as well as a CT scan will be taken. You will then have your mouth numbed so that the titanium implant posts can be placed in your jaw. For implants, the healing process takes place over about four to six months. During this period, the natural bone grows around the post, creating a solid, unmovable foundation to support the bridge.
When the healing process is completed, your next appointment will be to install the bridge. The prosthetic tooth will be anchored to the implant and then secured to the crowns on either side for an exceptional level of stability and a natural appearance. You will leave our office with an incredible boost in self-confidence that only a perfect smile can bring.
