Dental Checkups in Gardena

Why Checkups Are Important

Your routine dental checkups should occur every six months. These checkups are a crucial step in maintaining your dental health, and avoiding decay, tooth loss, and gum problems. During your routine checkup, Dr. Barkhordar and his professional team will evaluate the condition of your teeth and gums, clean them thoroughly, and leave you with a sparkling smile.

Dental checkups are exceptionally important, and allow you to ensure that your teeth, mouth, and gums are healthy. During your appointment, Dr. Barkhordar can:

Identify Any Problems Early

The earlier problems are identified, the better it is for you. A small cavity can be easily filled, while a deep cavity will require the removal of more of the natural tooth structure. A dental checkup will find any areas that need work, and get them resolved much more quickly and easily.

Thorough Cleaning

Our special dental tools and procedures will clean your teeth far more thoroughly than you could at home. Missing a cleaning could allow tartar and plaque to build up, creating problems. Get your teeth thoroughly cleaned every six months for better dental health.

Prevent Serious Dental Problems

Many serious dental issues are not visible to the eye, and may not have symptoms that you can feel. These are problems that can then suddenly flare up, causing severe pain and discomfort and requiring emergency care. A routine checkup allows us to identify any areas that are in trouble before they advance to a more serious stage. This can save you from having a more extensive procedure in the future.

What to Expect in a Routine Dental Checkup

Your checkup starts with a cleaning, which is administered by one of our friendly, capable dental hygienists. A small metal tool is used to scrape any tartar from your teeth. Your teeth will then be flossed to remove any remaining debris or particles of food that have been lodged between your teeth. Fluoride and special abrasive cleaners are used to polish your teeth, making them brighter and whiter, removing stains and any built-up plaque.

Once your teeth cleaning is complete, we will X-ray your teeth, gums and jaw. These X-rays allow us to identify any problem areas, such as tooth decay, wisdom teeth, or orthodontic issues. Your X-rays are safe, as your body will be covered by a protective apron, and our modern equipment uses the lowest level of radiation possible. You will merely bite down on a plastic piece so that images of your teeth can be taken. These images are immediately available digitally, so there is no waiting to have them evaluated.

The last part of your routine exam is when Dr. Barkhordar personally examines your teeth. He will then advise you if you need any treatment. This process is customized to suit your personal condition, as has been impacted by your lifestyle, your general oral health, and any risk factors. If he identifies problems such as tooth decay or gum disease, he will advise you of the treatment needed, or how you can improve your oral health with various actions at home. If you have no cavities, but are in a high-risk category, he may advise that you have a dental sealant applied for more protection.

How Often Should I Have a Checkup?

The ADA (American Dental Association) recommends all patients have a full dental checkup every six months. A checkup is the most effective way to protect the health of your teeth, gums, and mouth, and identify problem areas before they turn serious.

Certain patients are advised to get a checkup and cleaning more frequently. These include pregnant women, smokers, people with gum disease or a weakened immune system, or patients who have a history of cavities or have diabetes. We do everything possible for our patients – and your checkup schedule will be based upon your individual condition.
