Omid Barkhordar, DDS

Our periodontist has specialized training in diagnosing and treating gum disease. At Gardena Dental Care, we help our patients resolve even the most serious periodontal problems. We offer the most advanced, state-of-the-art treatments for these issues. It is important that areas of infection or inflammation are addressed and resolved quickly, as when gum disease is left to develop it can lead to bone and tooth loss, as well as other health problems. Our goal is to fully eliminate any infection or inflammation, and to fully restore your oral health.
Gum Disease – What Is It?

If you have inflamed, red, or tender gums, these are the first symptoms of periodontal disease. When plaque, bacteria, and tartar have been allowed to develop, it leads to gum disease that must be treated thoroughly and effectively. Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease, in which the gums become red and swollen, and tend to bleed easily when brushed. This condition can usually be reversed with correct daily brushing and flossing, along with a full professional cleaning. If gingivitis is not treated early, it can advance to a more serious form of gum disease called periodontitis. The gums begin to recede from the teeth, forming pockets of infection — a more dangerous health condition. The connective tissue that holds your teeth in place is affected, the teeth can begin to loosen, and there can be loss of a portion of bone structure in the jaw.
Treating Gum Disease

Dr. Barkhordar offers his patients the most modern treatments for gum disease, as well as the associated dental problems. The first step in treating gum disease correctly will be a full evaluation. In an initial consultation, your gums and teeth will be carefully examined and a custom treatment plan created to effectively resolve the condition.

Scaling, or root planing, is one of the most common treatments for gum disease. This is a non-surgical treatment that essentially deep-cleans your teeth, removing tartar and plaque from top to bottom. This treatment halts the spread of infection and inflammation, giving your gums the opportunity to fully heal and return to a healthy state. For this procedure, your gums will be numbed with a local anesthetic. A state-of-the-art ultrasonic tool will be used to remove the tartar and plaque. For those who have a more serious case of gum disease, it may be necessary to have several treatments.

For patients who are suffering from a serious case of gum disease, with the jaw bone affected, treatment may include bone grafting. The lost bone will be replaced by synthetic bone, or natural bone from your palate or a donor. This bone graft covers the exposed root, and the treatment may be applied to one or several teeth, depending upon your condition. The process promotes your natural bone growth, restoring the stability of teeth that have loosened or become troublesome.

If your gums are receding due to periodontal disease, you may be a candidate for soft tissue grafting. This innovative procedure involves taking some of your own natural mouth tissue, and using it to reinforce your gums, filling in the receding areas. This is a highly effective treatment that stops the condition from advancing, handles teeth sensitivity, and restores your smile. The procedure is not painful, but during healing, you may experience some discomfort. Dr. Barkhordar will prescribe an appropriate medication to help you through the healing period.
