What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the practice of administering medication that will help a patient experience a pain-free and comfortable dental treatment. Our highly trained Dr. Omid Barkhordar is very experienced in performing the gentlest dental procedures, and our attentive staff is committed to creating a relaxing environment for you and your family.

What Is Conscious Sedation?

Conscious sedation refers to any type of sedation that keeps you conscious during a dental procedure. These types of sedation can be oral pain killing pills, nitrous oxide gas, or topical anesthesia. The purpose of conscious sedation is to alleviate pain and anxiety while keeping you awake and alert. It’s used for routine procedures such as teeth cleanings and dental fillings.

What Is Twilight Sedation?

Twilight sedation is in between conscious and unconscious sedation. It makes you feel relaxed and a bit sleepy, kind of like you feel when you are falling asleep. You will be only semi-conscious and may not remember everything that happened during the session. However, you will be awake enough to follow directions. Twilight sedation is often given through nitrous oxide or an IV.

What Is Unconscious Sedation?

Unconscious sedation is also known as general anesthesia. Unconscious sedation completely knocks you out, so you are asleep during a procedure. An IV or a breathing mask might be used to create a state of unconscious sedation. It’s typically only used for dental surgeries.

  • Relieves fear and anxiety

What Sedation Options Are Available?

Our office understands that each patient has different dental needs and anxiety levels. We also know just how important personalized care is to our patients, which is why we provide a selection of sedation options for you to choose from. Whichever you pick, you can be sure that your method will be proficiently administered, and your progress will be carefully observed throughout your entire treatment. The sedation choices we offer are:

  • Oral Sedation: Oral sedation involves taking a pill that will induce drowsiness. Dr. Barkhordar uses his strong background in sedation dentistry to decide exactly which oral sedation pill is best to guarantee your safety and comfort.
  • General Anesthesia: General anesthesia can be given through an IV or breathing mask and will induce complete unconsciousness.
  • Nitrous Oxide: Nitrous oxide is a frequently used gas that induces a state of calmness and relaxation. It is breathed through a mask placed over the nose. The effects of nitrous oxide do not continue long after treatment and many patients can even take themselves home.
  • Topical Anesthesia: We will often numb your gums and oral tissue to make common procedures less painful. A gel or a small needle is used to administer the numbing agent.

What Is the Process for Dental Sedation?

The process for sedation depends on which type of sedation is used. Sedation may be administered through a breathing mask (nitrous oxide), oral medication, IV, or via a needle for topical numbing. At Gardena Dental Care, we will go over exactly what to expect with each type of dental sedation.

For certain types of sedation, you may need to have someone drive you home from your appointment and it’s a good idea to have someone stay with you to monitor you afterwards (typically IV sedation).

What Does Dental Sedation Cost?

Dental sedation costs vary depending on the type of sedation we use. For some treatments, the cost of sedation is included in the cost of the procedure, which is typical with local anesthetics used for numbing tissue. If you need IV sedation, you may need to pay an additional fee. Your dental insurance may also help cover some of these costs. Talk to our friendly administrative staff to learn more about what potential sedation costs might be.
