What Is Air Abrasion in Gardena?
Air abrasion utilizes a machine similar to a sandblaster (a tool to remove rust and paint). The air abrasion machine sends out a gentle stream of particles and compressed air. The fine particles are composed of one or more of the following components:
- Baking soda
- Aluminum oxide
- Silica
Your Gardena dentist aims the nozzle of the air abrasion machine at the part of the tooth that is decayed or stained. As the particles make contact with the tooth, they break up the stain and remove the decay.
During this appointment, your dentist’s assistant will use a high-speed suction device to vacuum the particles to ensure you don’t swallow them.
Is Air Abrasion Safe?
Yes, air abrasion in Gardena is both safe and effective. However, as with any procedure performed in our office, we will take precautions to ensure your safety and comfort.
For instance, we’ll provide you with protective eyewear during an air abrasion appointment. The eyewear protects your eyes from the particles and the water we use to rinse the particles away.
In some cases, we’ll also use a rubber dam and/or cotton rolls to isolate the tooth/teeth and protect your gum tissue. Your gingiva is very delicate, and while the air abrasion machine is safe to use on enamel, it may irritate the gum tissue.
