What Should I Do in the Event of a Dental Emergency?

If you think you are having a dental emergency, call us at Gardena Dental Care at (424) 295-7885 right away, even if it’s after hours. If we are available, we will triage your dental emergency over the phone and determine whether you need to come into our office as soon as possible. You might also be able to treat your dental emergency at home with our guidance. In some cases, it might be prudent to go to the emergency room for treatment of a dental emergency in Gardena. When in doubt, call 9-1-1.

What Types of Dental Emergencies Do You Treat in Gardena?

With our attentive staff, expert dentists, and state-of-the-art technology, we're more than qualified to skillfully and quickly treat many different dental emergencies, including:

  • Object caught between teeth: We are well-qualified to safely extract an object stuck in your teeth. Please do not attempt to remove the object yourself.
  • Disruptive pain in gums: An infection or other serious oral issue could be the source of your uncomfortable gum pain, and these complications need to be treated as quickly as possible. We suggest you use a cold compress to relieve pain until your appointment.
  • Broken tooth: A broken tooth needs immediate treatment in order to save it. Applying a cold compress can help provide relief from the swelling and pain until you see us.
  • Crippling tooth pain: Serious oral health issues such as an exposed nerve can cause debilitating tooth pain and need to be quickly addressed. Intense tooth pain can cause more oral health issues, so we'll make sure to diagnose and treat you as soon as possible.
  • Tooth loss: If you've lost a tooth, please see us right away so we can restore it. Until you come in, we recommend you rinse any debris, make sure the tissue stays intact, and store the tooth in a cup of warm milk. You need to see us within an hour of the tooth loss to save the tooth.

When Should I Go to the Emergency Room for a Dental Emergency?

There are a few cases where you should go to an emergency room if you are having a dental emergency in Southern California. Always call us first at (424) 295-7885, but if you cannot reach our answering service, or when in doubt, call 9-1-1. Here are some cases when a trip to the ER may be important:

Tooth loss: If you are within an hour of us and we have availability, you can come into our Gardena dental office if a tooth has been knocked out. However, if we are not within an hour’s distance and/or it’s after office hours, you should go to the nearest emergency room so they can save the tooth. Remember, you need to be seen within the hour. Rinse the tooth off, do not clean off the pulp, and either place it in some milk or hold it in the side of the mouth with ample saliva. If it can be fit back into the socket, you can also try that before going to the emergency room.

Broken jaw: A broken jaw is a very serious dental emergency, and you should go immediately to the nearest hospital. Stabilize the jaw as much as possible and don’t move it. Have the patient avoid speaking.

Excessive bleeding: If someone is bleeding from the mouth excessively for whatever the reason, it’s probably a good idea to go to the emergency room.

Severe infection: If an infection in the mouth is causing a high fever, especially for babies or small children, err on the side of caution and go to the ER.
