What Are Metal Braces?
Metal braces are an orthodontic appliance that utilizes steel wires and brackets and elastic bands to move and reposition teeth. They are attached to your teeth and are not removable.
What Types of Metal Braces Are Available?
In the past, there was only one type of metal braces available, but that is no longer the case. The options for metal braces are:
Traditional: Traditional braces are placed on the front of your teeth. Elastic bands attach the wires and brackets to your teeth. Today’s traditional braces are smaller, more comfortable and don’t draw as much attention as previous versions.
Lingual: Lingual metal braces are placed behind the teeth, making them much less visible. They have the same components as traditional braces.
Self-Litigating: The biggest difference between self-litigating braces and traditional ones are that they do not require elastic bands. Instead, they have a built-in system of clips that attach the brackets and wires. This results in fewer orthodontist visits and less friction on your teeth.
