Porcelain Inlays & Onlays

Porcelain Inlays and Onlays Gardena, CA

Cavities can put a damper on your smile, especially if amalgam fillings are used for treatment. Luckily, there’s another option that can leave your smile looking natural – porcelain inlays and onlays

If you have damaged teeth, this restorative procedure may be the solution.

What Are Porcelain Inlays & Onlays?

Porcelain inlays can be thought of as partial fillings, and onlays as partial crowns. Both are custom made, used to restore decaying teeth and are nearly undetectable as they match the natural color of your real teeth.

What Is the Difference Between Inlays & Onlays?

The difference between inlays and onlays is their placement on a tooth.

Porcelain inlays are used to repair any damage located on a tooth’s cusp, or the bump on a tooth’s surface. Porcelain onlays, on the other hand, are great for larger areas of tooth damage, covering multiple tooth cusps and extending over a tooth’s outer surface.

When Are Porcelain Inlays & Onlays Necessary?

A porcelain inlay or onlay may be recommended if you have:

  • Fractured, broken or chipped teeth
  • Tooth decay
  • Large or cracked fillings

They are also used to cosmetically enhance smiles.

How Are Inlays/Onlays Different from Fillings and Crowns?

Compared to fillings and crowns, inlays and onlays:

  • Cover larger areas and amounts of decay
  • Last longer and are stronger
  • Preserve larger areas of healthy tooth, requiring less enamel to be removed before placement
  • Cost less

What Are the Advantages of Inlays & Onlays?

Besides providing patients with a new smile that is both comfortable and stunning, there are a few other advantages that come with inlays and onlays:

  • They securely bond to your tooth. Instead of being separately packed into your tooth like traditional metal fillings, inlays/onlays and the tooth are structurally joined.
  • They strengthen teeth. Inlays/onlays pull on the periphery of your teeth, applying an inner force that holds the tooth together. Alternatively, metal fillings apply an outward force that weaken the tooth.
  • They are durable. With daily care, inlays/onlays prolong the life of your tooth forever.

What Is the Inlay/Onlay Procedure?

Two visits are necessary to complete an inlay or onlay procedure.

During the first visit, the tooth is cleaned and all decay is removed. Once the decayed area is removed, your dentist will then create an impression of the tooth for a perfect, custom fit. The tooth is then protected with a temporary restoration until the permanent one is ready, which takes a few weeks.

On your second visit, the temporary restoration is removed and your tooth will be cleaned once more. Your custom inlay or onlay is then placed, ensuring that it fits well without interfering with the functionality of your bite.

Once you confirm that the inlay or onlay feels comfortable, the dentist will attach it to your tooth with a special bonding or cement. If necessary, more adjustments will be made.

How Much Do Inlays & Onlays Cost?

The cost of inlays and onlays depend on the how many custom fillings need to be made, how large the area is being covered, and the location of the teeth being treated.

While many insurance plans will cover some of the cost, because this is a restorative procedure for damaged teeth, Gardena Dental Care works with our patients to ensure they are able to receive necessary treatment.
