What Is the Inlay/Onlay Procedure?
Two visits are necessary to complete an inlay or onlay procedure.
During the first visit, the tooth is cleaned and all decay is removed. Once the decayed area is removed, your dentist will then create an impression of the tooth for a perfect, custom fit. The tooth is then protected with a temporary restoration until the permanent one is ready, which takes a few weeks.
On your second visit, the temporary restoration is removed and your tooth will be cleaned once more. Your custom inlay or onlay is then placed, ensuring that it fits well without interfering with the functionality of your bite.
Once you confirm that the inlay or onlay feels comfortable, the dentist will attach it to your tooth with a special bonding or cement. If necessary, more adjustments will be made.
